Woman wearing the Wild & Free COBE waterproof coat on a dog walk in autumn, UK and Ireland

Is the COBE the best waterproof coat for dog walking? An honest answer.

I'll be honest with you up front: I made the COBE, so I'm not exactly a neutral party. But I also walk a dog every single day in Northern Ireland, where the weather has a personal vendetta against optimism. So when I tell you the COBE works for dog walking, I'm telling you from the car park of a muddy field at 7am, not from a marketing meeting.

Here's what I actually know about finding the right waterproof coat for dog walking — and whether the COBE is the answer for you or not.

What dog walking actually demands from a coat

Dog walking is more demanding than most people account for when they're buying outerwear. You're outside in all weathers, not just the nice ones. You're moving — which means you heat up — and then you stop, which means you cool down fast. You need pockets that can hold a phone, keys, and something you'd rather not think about. And you'll often come straight from the walk to somewhere else — the school gate, the supermarket, the coffee shop — so you need something that doesn't look like you've just crawled through a hedge.

The specific demands, in order of importance:

Waterproofing you can actually trust — not water-resistant, actually waterproof — because UK and Irish rain does not respect optimism

Warmth when you stop moving — a shell without lining will keep you dry but not warm when you're standing still for five minutes while your dog investigates something unpleasant

A hood that stays up in wind — structured, practical

Deep pockets at the right height — hand-warmer pockets that actually warm your hands

Freedom of movement — bending, reaching, the occasional undignified sprint

Something you'll actually reach for by the door every morning without having to think about it

That last one matters more than people admit. The best dog walking coat is the one that lives by your door and you never have to debate wearing.

The COBE on a dog walk — what works

The COBE is waterproof to 10,000mm hydrostatic head. To put that in context: a heavy rainstorm is around 8,000mm. Sustained sideways rain in a Northern Irish January is about as demanding as waterproofing gets, and the COBE handles it. I've worn mine in conditions that have defeated four previous coats.

The sherpa fleece lining is what makes it work when you stop moving. It's a full lining — not a thin polyester layer — and it holds warmth even in wind. I can stand at a gate for ten minutes in February without getting cold. That's the test I use.

The pockets are genuinely deep and at the right height. You can fit a phone, keys, and two poo bags without them falling out when you bend over. I know that sounds like a low bar. It isn't.

The hood has structure to it. It stays up in wind. It covers your head properly. It's adjustable. After years of hoods that collapse the second they encounter actual weather, this is a bigger deal than it sounds.

"I've walked my two spaniels every day in all weathers since October and this is the first coat that has kept me completely dry and warm for the full walk every single time. I've recommended it to six people. Three have bought it." — Sarah, Leeds.

What the COBE isn't — be honest with yourself

The COBE is not a Dryrobe. It's not designed as a changing robe, it doesn't have the hugely oversized fit that lets you change underneath it, and if that's primarily what you need it for, buy a Dryrobe. They're excellent at what they do.

The COBE is also not a lightweight packable jacket. It's substantial — a proper winter coat with a full lining. If you want something that folds into a pocket for an occasional shower, this isn't it.

And it's not a close-fitted tailored coat. It's designed with a relaxed, generous fit that goes over a fleece or a chunky jumper. If you want something that looks tailored, this isn't that either.

What it is: a waterproof, fleece-lined, properly warm coat designed for the woman who goes outside in real weather every day and wants one coat that does the job properly without making her look like she's given up.

How to know if it's right for you

Ask yourself three questions.

First: do you go outside in rain, wind, or cold on a regular basis and need to stay dry and warm? If yes, it's designed for you.

Second: do you want to go straight from the outdoors into normal life without changing? If yes, the COBE's cut and colourways make that straightforward.

Third: are you between sizes or planning to wear it over layers? If yes, size up. The COBE is designed with layering room, and if you're wearing it over a fleece — which you will on a cold walk — you want that room.

Not sure on your size? The COBE fits generously — designed to go over a fleece or a hoodie. If you're between sizes and you layer, size up. If you mainly wear it as a standalone, take your usual size. Email us at customerservice@wildandfreeoutdoors.com and we'll help you choose before you order.

What to look for in any waterproof dog walking coat

Whether you buy the COBE or something else, here are the things that actually matter — because the wrong coat is an expensive mistake.

Waterproof rating

Anything below 5,000mm is water-resistant, not waterproof. For real rain, you need 5,000mm minimum. For sustained heavy rain — the kind you get in Ireland and Scotland — you want 10,000mm or above. The COBE is 10,000mm. Check this number before buying any waterproof coat.

Lining

A waterproof shell with no thermal lining will keep you dry but cold. For winter and lets be honest sometimes spring and autumn dog walking you need a lining. Sherpa or fleece is best at this price range. Thin polyester linings photograph well and perform poorly in the real world.

Hood

Must have enough structure to stay up in wind. A hood that collapses when it's actually raining is useless. Try the hood before you commit — pull it up and see if it covers your head properly and stays there.

Pockets

Deep enough for a phone. At the right height so you can reach them with arms slightly down. This eliminates a surprising number of coats that put pockets at waist height or make them decoratively shallow.

Care

Waterproof performance degrades over time if a coat isn't looked after. Look for something you can machine wash on a cool temperature and re-proof with a DWR spray (Nikwax TX.Direct is the standard). The COBE can go in the washing machine — cold wash, no fabric softener — and takes a DWR spray well.

We've also written a full guide on what to wear dog walking in the rain if you want more detail before deciding.

We have 500+ five-star reviews from women across the UK and Ireland. Read them — not for the stars but for the detail. Women tell you exactly when and where they wear the CO-BE, how it fits, and whether it held up in their specific conditions. That's more useful than anything we could write here.

From me, directly

I made the COBE because I was fed up with buying waterproof coats that disappointed me in the field — literally in the field, in the dark, in the rain, wondering why I was cold and wet again.

I'm 47. I have three kids, a dog called Milo, and a business. I need a coat that works every day, not just when conditions are favourable. The COBE is what I wear day to day for my real life. It's what I designed for myself, and the 16,000 women who read my monthly catch-up wellness email — many of them dog owners — are the reason it exists.

If you try it and something isn't right, tell me. We're a small brand and we take that seriously.
